Event Details
In the gallery’s “Moon Lounge,” which overlooks Rosser Avenue, this installation will encourage contemplation and remembrance of the devastation inflicted upon Canadian communities by the residential school system. In a collaborative project that took place over many months in 2025, participants contributed strands of beads according to a symbolic vocabulary. Different colours represents the tears, the known and unknown victims, and, finally, the survivors of residential schools. Educator Vanessa Pascal notes, “A moment that stayed with me was watching students place each bead with intention—understanding that every colour represented a life, a story, a truth.” This observation is corroborated by participant Alex Braun, who reflects, “While my strands alone might not be considered art, the collection will be an art piece with a strong message. In its own way, the strands will show the strength of community in confronting challenges.” The strands will be hung in curtains from diamond willow staffs which were gifted to the project, and visitors will be invited to share their reflections in a participatory “strand” that will be on display as well.
