Wheat City Nuit Blanche (Brandon)

Returning for another Culture Days celebration, on October 1st from 2PM until 1AM, Wheat City Nuit Blanche will transform the studios, hallways, stairwells, and hidden corners of the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba into an all-ages multidisciplinary art 'happening'. In addition to the evening events at the AGSM, businesses and spaces around downtown Brandon will be hosting performances and installations throughout the day. In the White Night tradition, made popular in cities around the world since 1984, venues will be filled with live music, performance, visual art, installation, DJs, interactive kiosks, and a family-friendly dance party. Co-curated by Leanne Zacharias (Brandon University School of Music) and Natalia Lebedinskaia (Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba), this year’s event takes inspiration from its collaborative beginnings and will focus on duos and duets, as well as other forms of collaboration.

Now in its second year, Wheat City Nuit Blanche will increase its daytime programming to incorporate businesses and venues around downtown Brandon, including Fraser Sneath Coffee, Brandon General Museum and Archives, and a number of other locations along Rosser Avenue. Some of this year’s highlights will include: installation artist Barb Flemington creating a new piece at the General Museum and incorporating the B.J. Hales Collection; Janet Shaw-Russell and Lisa Lysack collaborating on new work about family and nesting that will take over a storage room at the Art Gallery; and painter Gabe Iwanski working alongside hairstylist Rose to transform her space into a hybrid gallery and salon. Nuit Blanche is a unique opportunity to see and experience musical performance outside of the usual context of a concert. Numerous musicians and music students will congregate at the AGSM and local businesses to perform existing and new works in ways that engage the audience in unexpected ways. One featured duet is between trombonist Aaron Wilson (Brandon University School of Music) and his baying hound dog, Sally.
Wheat City Nuit Blanche will transform the Art Gallery and downtown spaces to showcase the city’s vibrant artistic community, and give audiences a chance to celebrate art, interact with artists, and embrace creative experimentation and collaboration in both familiar and unfamiliar settings. More information about specific venues and participating artists will be revealed in the weeks to come, including a complete map of locations for the project. More information may be found on the AGSM website, www.agsm.ca. The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba is located at 710 Rosser Avenue. It can be accessed either from the Town Centre parkade, or from the first floor of the Town Centre Mall through the elevators near the library. Parking in the Town Centre is free for AGSM visitors.
